Doing a Collab

Doing a collab is about working together with non competitors who have the same customers as you. You both offer different products and possibly but not necessarily all working in the same industry. Here are two examples:

Someone selling men’s skincare and hair products sets up a free demonstration at a pub that specialises in whiskey and the customers get to sample the whiskey while they are pampered. This is a win-win for the publican and the skincare seller. The skincare seller gets some interesting photos and video for their social media account (and so does the publican), the publican gets to offer his customers a novel experience, and the customers get some free whiskey and exposed to the idea of taking pride in looking after their skin.

The other example is when you take photographs or video of a supplier doing their day-to-day transaction with your business. For instance, maybe you are a tour guide and always buy your customers a pre-packed lunch from the same bakery. The collab would be you picking up the lunch and chatting to your friend and some video of their premises. Have a look at how one of my customers is getting on here https://www.tangatamedia.co.nz/chris-brennan-fly-fishing-case-study/

The key is to not overthink a collab, customers want to see what you are like as a person and a collab lets them see a ‘slice of life’ and often very little is said. It’s more about the body language portraying that other people trust you.

Business owners I have worked with are naturally quite reticent about approaching other business owners about a collab. However they have reported back that others are happy to support them and it has been a surprisingly heart-warming experience.
